Daytime relief for caregivers. Companionship for care recipients.

Adult day program respite is ideal for caregivers who are looking for a few hours to run some errands, attend an appointment, or get some caregiver relief for themselves. Structured day programs are delivered in a variety of community-based settings and may provide supervised recreational and social activities, meals, personal care and basic health care services tailored to the care recipient’s needs. Offered as full or partial days. Adult Day Programs are sensitive to the needs of people living with memory loss, Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementia, a physical disability or chronic health conditions.

What services are available?

  • Safe and secure environment
  • Medication reminders and/or assistance
  • Assistance with activities of daily living, including assistance with eating, toileting, mobility (walking), and transferring
  • Flexible hours
  • Snack, meal and beverages (including special diets)
  • A variety of programs and services
  • Relief for persons providing care at home
  • Caters to different language and cultural needs of clients

Who is eligible for services?

Adult Day Programs are available to those who

  • Live at home (e.g., house, apartment, retirement home)
  • Are having difficulty with activities of daily living (e.g., dressing, toileting
  • In need of help with activities of daily living (e.g., dressing, toileting, eating, etc.)
  • Would benefit from a regularly scheduled period of time outside the home in a supervised environment.

Other criteria may apply, depending on which agency is providing the services. There is a fee to attend Adult Day Programs, and these fees may vary between programs. In some cases, a fee subsidy may be available.

The care recipient must be assessed by Mississauga Halton LHIN Home and Community Care before attending an Adult Day Program. There are several ways you can begin this process.
