Temporary short stays out-of-home

Out-of-home (short stay) respite provides caregiver relief overnight, for a few days or even for a couple of weeks while the care recipient is well taken care of in a short stay bed or room in a long-term care home, retirement home, or other community-based location.

What services are available?

In general, care recipients will have access to:

  • Personal hygiene (e.g. bathing, toileting, dressing/undressing, mouth care)
  • Medical reminders and management
  • Three (3) daily nutritious meals.

During their stay, care recipients also have access to the same services and activities that the residents of the facility enjoy.

Who is eligible for services?

A care recipient may be considered if they are:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)
  • In need of help with activities of daily living
  • In need of onsite supervision or monitoring several times a day to ensure his/her safety and well-being.

Other criteria may apply, depending on which agency is providing the services.
